“We Want To See More Real Women”

Winning Letter of October Issue.

Shape is probably the easiest to read of all the local fitness and health magazines around, and I find every article fresh and new. The one featuring sports shoes was particularly informative and tempting. I’m not a big fan of running—I’m more of a yoga/Pilates person, but have learned a lot about running from your magazine. Plus, how to wash your “va-jay-jay”? I never knew that a locally-produced magazine could be so candid, but it was a real eye-opener because it was fun to read too. I just have one concern though: I felt that the model on your July cover didn’t quite represent us as Malaysians— is she Caucasian? I just came back from the U.S., where I got to browse through Shape. I found that the U.S. edition tends to have cover models who are slim but have muscles and are fit-looking (inspiring), however, your July cover model looked rather malnourished and skinny. My friends also agree and I’m afraid that it not a very suitable portrayal for your magazine because we tend to see very similar faces and body types in other women’s magazines anyway. This wouldn’t gel with your health and fitness theme, you know what I mean? Hopefully you’ll show more ‘real’ people who really work out—I think that will be more enticing and will encourage more women who like fitness to buy your magazine. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
