Travel Free! Part 2!

Don’t let anxiety stop you from having a fun-filled vacation.

Travelling is supposed to be fun, but if you’re struggling with fears, anxieties and phobias, just the mention of travel may set your heart racing (and not in the good way). If your anxieties are stopping you from living the life you want, it’s time to get a grip on them—or get the help you need to overcome them once and for all. Send your fears packing with these tips from our experts.

KEEP YOURSELF BUSY

A mind that’s idle or focused on a fear can heighten anxious feelings. The remedy: Keep yours busy. For example, if you’re afraid of flying, here’s what you can do to take your mind off that very thought: Read Pack a book, magazine or puzzle to keep your mind occupied. One thing you might want to avoid: The news. Reports on disasters such as those on air crashes can be just the thing to trigger a major case of anxiety. Suggested reading: 100 Years of Solitude by Gabriel García Márquez, and Siddartha by Hermann Hesse.

KEEP YOURSELF COMFORTABLE

Whether you’re travelling by air, sea or land, feeling comfortable physically and mentally will make your journey more enjoyable. Try dressing for comfort, layered clothing works best because it allows you to adapt to a wider range of temperatures and conditions. Whenever possible, opt for comfortable sneakers instead of heels—your feet will thank you when you’re running late and rushing to that boarding gate. Also get yourself a comfy sleeping mask if you want to get some shut eye without being disturbed.
