Travelling is supposed to be fun, but if you’re struggling with fears, anxieties and phobias, just the mention of travel may set your heart racing (and not in the good way). If your anxieties are stopping you from living the life you want, it’s time to get a grip on them—or get the help you need to overcome them once and for all. Send your fears packing with these tips from our experts.
CHANNEL THE CALMING POWER OF MUSIC The impact music has on our moods, emotions and brain functions have proven to be nothing less than powerful. In fact, listening to music can help draw a person in, focus her mind, and induce relaxation, says Gurpreet Kalsi, a music therapist. For it to be relaxing, music should have between 60 and 78 beats per minute, which corresponds to a relaxed heart rate, says Gurpreet. “A slower tempo induces a calmer disposition that leads to a restful but alert state of mind.” Music with mellower tones that resonate longer and vibrate at a slower rate also works well, she adds. |

TAKE THE NATURAL PATH
Dr. Wong Ang Peng, a consultant naturopathic physician, says that quelling anxiety with medication only camouflages the symptoms and suppresses feelings of unease or discomfort, rather than help a person address its source. This, he says, ultimately results in a false (and temporary) sense of well-being. “To calm down, try taking a small pellet of aconite (an extract from the monkshood plant). It often works in seconds or minutes,” he says. If you have physical symptoms other than the usual butterflies in your stomach—such as nausea—give Cocculus indicus extract (from the fruit and seed of the levant berry) a try, he suggests. However, be sure to consult a homeopath or naturopath before you consume any of these homeopathic remedies. Be sure to check back soon for part 2 of Travel Free! |
