Splitsville

The song has it right: Breaking up is hard to do. But when all else fails it’s something we all have to deal with—and not just with guys. We turned to our pros to find out the best way to part with an employer, a hairdresser, and a former BFF.

How To End Things With… YOUR EMPLOYER

  • It’s the right time if…
  • You don’t feel valued anymore — maybe you aren’t asked for input on projects or are no longer invited to attend meetings—or you’re so unfulfilled and bored that you spend your days trolling the Web for entertainment. Alternatively, you might have outgrown your current position—you’ve learned everything you can and there’s no chance to move any higher at your company.

    • Make a clean break…
Start off with a compliment, telling your manager how much you’ve learned from him or her, then explain that you’re ready for a new challenge (this is not the time to air your grievances, be overly emotional, or insult your bosses—you’ll hurt your reputation, and you never know who you may end up working for again).
