To fade spots quickly (you’ll notice results in about four weeks), most dermatologists recommend applying prescription-strength hydroquinone (HQ) twice daily. Although it’s effective, the use of HQ is contro versial (it’s banned in Europe), and it can be too harsh for women with sensitive skin. Gentler OTC alternatives include vitamin C, soy, kojic acid, and licorice root extract. “These ingredients work by breaking down the clusters of melanin in cells and halting the production of even more color,” says Ronald L. Moy, M.D., a dermatologist in Westlake Village, CA.
