Salutes Dr. Ruth

The sexual revolution started with the Pill, but it came of age with this disarmingly blunt erotic-advice pioneer.

It’s hard to believe, what with today’s front-page headlines about sexting and discussions of oral sex on Dr. Phil, but 30 years ago the ins and outs of erotic desire and fulfi llment were not part of the public discourse. Then, in 1980, a 4-foot-7 German-born doctor of psychosexual therapy named Ruth Westheimer began hosting a 15-minute radio show called Sexually Speaking, and the subject went mainstream. Listeners soon began to warm up to Dr. Ruth’s frank and funny approach to formerly off -limits topics like masturbation, pornography and sexual health; by the following year the show had expanded to a onehour call-in format and launched her into household-name territory.
