My Turning Point
Susan’s size made everyday tasks, like tying her shoes or playing with her two children, seem impossible. “It got to a point when even lying down was difficult,” she says. “That’s when I knew I had to do something.” She got advice from her mother—who had lost weight on a low-carb diet—and swore off the cookies, candy, and potato chips she indulged in every day. For several weeks Susan ate her fill of fresh fruit and vegetables and broiled chicken and fish. “I went from buying processed, packaged foods to picking up fresh produce and low-fat dairy,” she says. “That stopped my junk-food cravings.”
