“The 3 main joints of the lower limbs are the hip, knee and ankle joints,” says Dr. Chin Chee Howe, a consultant orthopaedic surgeon at Gleneagles Kuala Lumpur and Advanced Nueroscience and Orthopaedic Clinic. “These joints are the weight-bearing joints of the body and keep us mobile. For example, we’re able to walk on both uneven surfaces and normal ground because the ankle joint’s able to move up and down and side to side,” explains Pantai Medical Centre’s consultant orthopaedic and trauma surgeon, Dr. Gobinder Singh. He adds: “Joints are essentially stabilised by their shape and ligaments.”
