… just be sure it’s the right kind with the correct activewear!
Wearing the right activewear has a profound impact on your performance. Though no athlete, I found this out the hard way just a couple of weeks back.
Actually making a concerted attempt to train for this year’s SHAPE Night Run in July (turn to page 43), I have been running around my neighborhood covering 5km about twice a week (plus indoor cardio-strength circuits three times for the rest of the week), for the past month or so. Generally, I would ensure that I am well garbed for the effort: Super supportive sports bra? Check!
Comfortable running-T? Check! Sturdy anti-jiggle running tights? Check! Socks and proper running-specific shoes? Double check! Then, for some unfathomable reason, I got a little lazy two weeks ago. I decided that it seemed too much like hard work to get myself into the sports bra. Anyways, my regular bra felt plenty supportive. Not! Five minutes into my gentle jog warm-up, I felt terrible. It was amazing how the regular workday support bra just doesn’t cut it when you’re working out. You bet I had a "bounce" in my step; just not the right kind.
Suffice to say, I did not complete the 5km, throwing in the towel (felt like throwing in the bra as well) at just under three. I was furious…with myself, that is. What a stupid thing to do; me of all people who should have known better ten times over! That’s why it will pay to turn to this month’s Focus (from pages 41 to 53) on the importance of wearing the right thing for your activity. And if you’re still unsure how to put it all together, the gorgeous spread boasting the major brands of superior sporting wear will give you a nudge in the right sartorial direction.
